20 Questions to Ask at Your Consultation

A consultation is your assessment of the clinic as much as their assessment of you. These are the questions that reveal the most.

Bring this list. A clinic that welcomes direct questions is telling you something useful, and so is one that deflects them.

About the surgeon and team

  • Who will perform my extraction, and who will perform the implantation?
  • Is the surgeon GMC registered, and what is their registration number?
  • How many procedures like mine do you perform each year?
  • How many patients are treated at this clinic on a typical day?
  • Will I meet the person operating on me before the day itself?

About your plan

  • What Norwood stage am I, and how stable is my loss?
  • How many grafts do I need, and is that grafts or hairs?
  • What density are you planning, in grafts per square centimetre?
  • How much donor supply will I have left afterwards?
  • Will I need a second procedure, and when?
  • What will this look like in twenty years as I continue to lose hair?

About cost and guarantees

  • Is this the final price, or can anything be added later?
  • What exactly is included: medication, kit, review appointments?
  • How many reviews are included and over what period?
  • What happens in writing if growth is poor at twelve months?
  • Is the deposit refundable, and under what conditions?
The most revealing questionAsk what would make you an unsuitable candidate. A clinic that cannot name any circumstance in which they would decline to operate is not assessing you, they are selling to you.

About aftercare

  • Who do I contact out of hours if there is a problem?
  • Is my first wash performed at the clinic?
  • What medication will I be given, and what are the side effects?
  • How soon after surgery will I be seen in person?

Frequently asked questions

Should I get more than one consultation?

Yes. Two or three consultations give you a basis for comparison on graft counts, hairline design and price. Significant differences in recommended graft numbers are worth questioning.

Is a free consultation a red flag?

No, it is standard practice across UK aesthetic clinics. What matters is whether a surgeon examines your scalp and whether you are given time without pressure to decide.

Should I be asked about my medical history?

Absolutely. Any clinic that does not take a full medical history including medication, previous surgery and family history is cutting corners that matter.

How long should a consultation take?

Typically forty five minutes to an hour. A ten minute conversation followed by a deposit request is not an assessment.
