How Much Does a Hair Transplant Cost in the UK?

Between £3,000 and £9,000 for most UK cases. Here is how that figure is built, what should be inside it, and how to spot a quote that will grow later.

Hair transplant surgery in the UK typically costs between £3,000 and £9,000, with the number of grafts being the main variable.

Pricing in this industry is genuinely confusing, partly because clinics quote in different units and partly because some deliberately quote a headline figure that is not the final figure. This guide explains how pricing works, what should be included and what questions to ask.

The three pricing models

ModelHow it worksWatch for
Per graftA price per graft, e.g. £2.50 eachFinal cost is unknown until graft count is confirmed
Per sessionA flat fee for a day of surgeryCheck the maximum graft count included
PackageAll-in fee covering everythingConfirm aftercare and reviews are genuinely included

We quote a single itemised figure in writing after your consultation. It covers surgeon and team time, theatre, consumables, medication, your take-home kit and every review appointment through to eighteen months.

These figures are a planning guide based on typical UK cases. They are not a quote and not a clinical assessment. Graft requirement depends on donor density, hair calibre, scalp laxity and the area measured in person. You receive a written, itemised quote after your consultation.

Questions to ask before you pay a deposit

  • Is this the final figure, or does anything get added later?
  • Who performs the extraction and implantation, and are they named?
  • How many review appointments are included, and over what period?
  • What happens, in writing, if growth is poor at twelve months?
  • Is medication and the aftercare kit included?
  • Is the deposit refundable, and under what conditions?
On very cheap quotesA price far below the UK range usually means something has been removed: surgeon involvement, aftercare, session length or graft count. Compare the whole package rather than the headline number. Our UK versus abroad guide covers this properly.

Paying for treatment

Most UK clinics offer finance spread over twelve to sixty months, subject to status. Ask for the total repayable amount rather than just the monthly figure, and check whether an interest-free option exists over a shorter term.

Frequently asked questions

Why do UK prices vary so much between clinics?

Mainly graft count, who performs the surgery, and what is bundled in. A quote that includes surgeon-led work, medication and eighteen months of in-person reviews will sit above one that covers the surgical day alone. Ask each clinic for a written itemisation and compare like for like.

Is a hair transplant available on the NHS?

Only in very limited circumstances, typically reconstruction after trauma, burns or cancer surgery. Hair restoration for male pattern baldness is considered cosmetic and is not routinely funded.

Do I pay per graft or per session?

It depends on the clinic. Per-graft pricing means your final cost is not fixed until the count is agreed. Package pricing gives certainty. Either can be fair, provided the clinic is transparent about what is included.

Should I pay a deposit before consultation?

No. A deposit should only follow a face-to-face assessment and a written plan. Be cautious about any clinic asking for money before a surgeon has examined your scalp.

Is finance available?

Most UK clinics offer finance over twelve to sixty months subject to status. Always ask for the total repayable figure rather than only the monthly payment.
