Scalp micropigmentation places thousands of tiny pigment deposits in the scalp to replicate the appearance of closely shaved hair follicles.
SMP is not a hair growth treatment. It is a cosmetic tattooing technique that reduces the contrast between hair and scalp, so thinning reads as density and bald areas read as a close shave.
What SMP is used for

The process
- Consultation and designHairline shape, density and pigment shade are agreed and matched to your natural colour.
- Session oneThe base layer of pigment is applied across the treatment area.
- Session twoTwo weeks later, density is built and the hairline refined once healing has settled.
- Session threeFinal refinement and blending, usually two to four weeks after the second.
- MaintenanceA top-up every three to five years as pigment naturally softens.

Frequently asked questions
Does SMP look fake?
Not when the pigment shade, dot size and hairline softness are matched properly. Poor SMP is usually the result of dots that are too large, too uniform or too dark. A well-executed hairline is deliberately irregular and slightly diffuse at the front.
How long does SMP last?
Typically three to five years before a top-up is needed. Pigment gradually softens and lightens over time rather than disappearing suddenly.
Can SMP hide a hair transplant scar?
Yes, and it is one of its strongest applications. It reduces the contrast between scar tissue and surrounding hair, making both strip scars and over-harvested donor areas far less visible.
Can I still have a hair transplant after SMP?
Yes. SMP does not prevent later surgery, though your surgeon needs to know it has been done as it can affect how the scalp is assessed.
Does it work if I want longer hair?
No. SMP replicates the look of shaved stubble and only works convincingly when hair is kept very short. If you want length and texture, a transplant is the appropriate route.
