HAIR LOSS GUIDE · THE MEN CLINICS

Hair Transplant Recovery Timeline

Two timelines run in parallel: looking normal again takes about a fortnight, seeing your result takes about a year.

Back to work 7–10 daysShedding weeks 2–6Growth month 4Final 12–18 months

Last clinically reviewed: August 2026

Most men return to desk-based work within seven to ten days. The full result takes twelve to eighteen months.

Recovery has two separate timelines that men often confuse: how long until you look normal, and how long until you see results. The first is measured in days. The second is measured in months.

Week by week recovery timeline after a hair transplant
Physical recovery is largely complete within a fortnight.

Week by week

  1. Day 1Dressing removed and the donor area checked. Some tightness and mild ache is normal.
  2. Days 2–4First wash performed at the clinic so you can see the correct technique. Swelling may move down towards the forehead.
  3. Days 5–9Crusts around each graft begin to lift with gentle washing. Do not pick them.
  4. Days 10–14Recipient redness fades substantially. Most men are comfortable in public and back at work.
  5. Weeks 3–6Transplanted hairs shed. This is expected and is not graft failure.
  6. Week 6 onwardNormal exercise resumes. The scalp looks much as it did before surgery.

Then the waiting

Month by month hair growth after a transplant
Meaningful growth starts around month four.

Months two and three are the hardest psychologically. The transplanted hair has shed, growth has not started, and it can feel as though nothing worked. This is the normal course. Read our guide to shedding if you are in this phase.

The rules that matter most

  • No picking or scratching the grafts for the first fourteen days
  • No heavy exercise, contact sport or swimming for four weeks
  • Sleep propped up at around forty five degrees for the first week
  • No direct sun on the recipient area for a month
  • No hats that press on the grafts for the first ten days
  • Alcohol and smoking avoided for at least a week, ideally longer

Full detail is in our aftercare guide.

Frequently asked questions

How long before I look normal?

Around ten to fourteen days for most men. Redness and small crusts are visible in week one and settle through week two. After shedding, the area looks much as it did before surgery until growth begins.

When can I go back to work?

Seven to ten days for desk-based work. Physical or outdoor jobs usually need two to three weeks, particularly where dust, sweat or hard hats are involved.

Is shedding normal?

Yes, and almost universal. Transplanted hairs shed between two and six weeks as the follicle enters a resting phase. The follicle remains in place and regrows from around month four.

When can I exercise again?

Light walking within days. Avoid heavy lifting, contact sport, swimming and heavy sweating for four weeks, then build back gradually. Elevated blood pressure early on can cause bleeding at graft sites.

When will I see the final result?

Twelve months for a fair assessment and eighteen months for the final judgement, as hair shafts continue to thicken. Crown work is typically slower than frontal work.
